John has climbed mountains for most of his life, and raised a family for the last 30 years, writing about both. He holds a Masters Degree in English, with an emphasis in Teaching Writing, and has been writing in many capacities for longer than he’s been a dad. As a freelance writer and editor in New Mexico, he helped writers edit and self-publish books (i.e., Judith Bluestone Polich’s award-winning Return of the Children of Light, first edition). As managing editor for start-up Taste magazine, created for Williams-Sonoma, he published articles on food and culture. For 15 years, John wrote grants and managed a team of writers at the national Sierra Club headquarters in San Francisco, putting Sierra Nevada trip reports into weekly Advancement Updates. Between trips with his climbing partner, Michael, John writes about their adventures, lives with his daughter and visits his sons, co-parenting with Susan and Chris in Oakland, CA.
